The Colorado Avalanche suffered another disappointing preseason loss, this time courtesy of the Utah Hockey Club. The Avs are now 0-3 in the preseason, while Utah improved to 3-1.

The game was a bit of a mismatch as the Colorado Avalanche iced a lineup consisting mostly of prospects and non-roster players. Meanwhile, Utah lined up most of their regulars on Sunday night.

Dylan Guenther led the way for Utah with two goals. The Avs countered with goals from Sam Malinski, Miles Wood, and Calum Ritchie.

While the game’s outcome was disappointing, there were some key bright spots to consider. Let’s take a look at three key points from the Colorado Avalanche loss to the Utah Hockey Club.

Three key points from the Colorado Avalanche's preseason loss to the Utah Hockey Club

Justus Annunen gave up five goals

So, no need to panic, here. Annunen was not at his best in this game, letting in five goals on 37 shots. In particular, the second period was tough for Annunen, as Utah scored three times in the frame. All three goals came from high-danger chances in close, leaving Annunen little room for error.

Annunen gave up one more goal in the third but tried to keep the game as close as possible. Unfortunately, the Avs offense could not come back.

Moving forward, Annunen should get at least another start. Hopefully, he can bounce back and show that this performance was just a one-off.

Sam Malinski stood out in the game

Malinski registered a goal and an assist on Sunday night. The undrafted player has shown consistency this preseason, seemingly poised to take the next step.

Following tonight’s performance, Malinski could be making a case that he belongs in the NHL. After 23 games last season, Malinski could get another long look this upcoming season.

Now, the likeliest outcome is that Malinski starts the season with the Colorado Eagles. However, he could be among the first call-ups in case of injury. Personally, I don’t see Malinski making the team out of camp. But the Avs could have a full-time NHLer on their game, so it would be worth giving Malinski another opportunity as soon as possible.

Calum Ritchie building a case to make the team

Calum Ritchie had another encouraging game. He scored for the second time this preseason, adding five shots on goal in the process.

With Ritchie growing more and more comfortable in the NHL, the Colorado Avalanche will face a tough decision: Do they give Ritchie a shot in the NHL or do they allow him to return to the Oshawa Generals for his final season?

It seems the likeliest outcome for Ritchie is to play one more year with the Oshawa Generals. However, there is a case to be made for Ritchie getting a nine-game audition. If he can prove he belongs, he stays for the remainder of the season.

Otherwise, sending Ritchie back to the OHL would be the most productive way to continue building his development. It will be interesting to see what decision the Avs ultimately make regarding Ritchie this season.
