The Colorado Avalanche took a tough loss on Wednesday night against the Winnipeg Jets. The 3-2 overtime loss was a bitter one to take. But if there’s any sort of consolation in the playoff-like game, it was the fact that the Avs lost to the best goalie in the world.
By that, I mean the Avs lost to Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyck played his usual lights-out style, keeping the Jets in the game. The ongoing criticism regarding the Jets, stating that the Jets would not win without Hellebuyck rang true against the Avs.
It took two great goals from the best players in the world, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, to tie the game and get it to overtime.
MacKinnon scored a beauty in the second period to open the scoring. The goal came on the heels of furious exchanges in which both sides traded impressive chances. Here’s a look:
It took two chances and the elite skills of MacKinnon to make the goal happen. Then, Cale Makar scored one of the pretties goals this season to tie the game in the third.
Makar hardly looked like a defenseman on the play. In fact, all sorts of players would kill to have Markar’s skills. Check out the play:
The goal was possible due to the combination of Makar’s scoring touch and Mikko Rantanen’s playmaking abilities. Something interesting about Makar’s goal was the fact that Rantanen set it up perfectly.
It’s interesting because Rantanen doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his playmaking abilities. Everyone knows he can score goals, but his strong playmaking abilities get lost in the shuffle.
In the end, the Avs got a point out of the epic Central Division showdown. The Avs remain in fourth place in the division but have a firm grasp on a playoff spot. There’s plenty of hockey to be played, but time is beginning to tick away.
