The Colorado Avalanche collective fanbase and organization remain stunned after blowing a 3-0 lead in Game 3 on Sunday night.

The loss put the Avalanche into an 0-3 deficit, one that seems practically insurmountable. While not unprecedented, coming back from it seems like something that only happens in the movies.

Following the game, Jared Bednar summed up the feeling in the room. He made it clear with a one-line response.

“It’s Low, it's as low as it can get."

Well, there’s no need for an advanced college degree to figure that out. The entire team’s morale sank to the ground when Tomas Hertl scored an unbelievable goal to give the Golden Knights the lead in the third period.

The rest of the post-game interviews all reflected the overall feeling of disappointment. But there is some hope for the Avalanche to make history this postseason.

Avalanche could be 5th team to come back from 0-3 deficit

While history is not on the Avalanche’s side, coming back from an 0-3 deficit is not unprecedented.

In total, there have been four instances in which a team has rallied from down 0-3 in a playoff series to win.

The first occasion happened in 1942 when the Detroit Red Wings rallied to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup Final.

The next time occurred in 1975 when the New York Islanders defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Islanders actually came back from 0-3 twice in the 1975 playoffs, but lost the second series in Game 7 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The two most recent instances were the 2010 Flyers, who rallied against the Boston Bruins, Atlantic Division, and the 2014 LA Kings, who beat the San Jose Sharks in the first round.

That’s it.

There have been six instances of teams coming back to force a Game 7, but ultimately losing the series. The most recent instance was the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. The Edmonton Oilers were seemingly left for dead at the side of the road, but rallied to even the series. The Oilers lost a tough Game 7 2-1.

That’s the historical precedent the Avalanche will try to draw from in this series.

Is it possible? Absolutely.

Is it likely? That depends. There’s always a possibility that the Golden Knights take their foot off the gas and give the Avalanche just enough of an opening to get back into the series.

Colorado’s entire season comes down to Game 4 on Tuesday night. The Avalanche are now at a point where nothing matters beyond the next game. Win and stay alive.
