It goes without saying that Colorado Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar has incredible talent. However, saying it never and will never get old. Makar is climbing a leaderboard, too. Saying that never gets old either. On Thursday night against the Calgary Flames, Makar registered yet another 20-goal season.
Makar now has three 20-goal seasons in his relatively short career. He’s only 26-years-old. That’s the thing that blows my mind, as it should yours. Then again, it’s not a huge surprise as we’ve all seen what type of talent he is and provides for the Colorado Avalanche.
Against the Flames on Thursday night, Makar registered a goal and an assist, adding two points to his totals for the 2024-25 season. He now has 60 points in 56 games. That puts him on pace for 87.8 points on the year if he keeps that pace up. Last season, Makar recorded 90 points, which set his new career-high.
As of this writing, Makar is in the top spot in points for a defenseman for the 2024-25 season. He’s the defenseman leader in goals and is third in assists with 40. The two above him are Zach Werenski of the Blue Jackets and Quinn Hughes of the Canucks.
Cale Makar can earn his second Norris trophy this season. Last year, I pointed out that it was not a bad thing that he didn’t win in 2023-24. I won’t even be delusional in saying that he got snubbed because he didn’t. However, if he ends up continuing to produce at the level that he currently is, he really should come away with the trophy.
Makar has 396 points in his five completed seasons, plus the 56 games he’s played in the 2024-25 season. If he keeps up with a solid pace, he can enter the top-5 all-time in points. Makar’s career trajectory has him on a great pace and he should be a Hall of Fame player when it’s all said and done.
