Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was non-committal about a Cale Makar injury update once again ahead of Game 3 on Sunday night against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena.
Bednar did not provide any substantial insight into Makar’s status. The Norris Trophy winner has missed the first two games of this series. While he looked good in video clips from practice, Makar has been evidently under significant discomfort.
That situation has made it extremely uncertain moving forward. While there have been indications that Makar might play, he’s been a game-time scratch for the first two games. When asked about it on Sunday, Bednar offered a very limited response.
“You’ll have to wait and see.”
This comment comes on the heels of Bednar telling reporters that it’s been Makar’s decision not to play in this series. As such, the latest Makar injury update continues to offer little insight into any sort of improvement in the star defenseman’s condition.
Bednar has doubled down on his comments regarding the need for everyone else to step up on the blue line.
“We need those guys… to be the best version of themselves they can be. They can’t go and do something that is not part of their DNA. It’s making sure their game is sharp both offensively and defensively, puck moving, obviously Cale helps in so many things. You just can’t put a new guy in the lineup and replace him.”

So, there you have it. Cale Makar’s injury update essentially means he remains in a quantum state. He will both play and not play until we find out which outcome it is. If Makar can’t play on Sunday night, then the burden of stepping up will become much greater on the guys hitting the ice.
The key will be for the Avalanche to remain consistent throughout the full 60 minutes. Game 2 was a prime example of how Vegas can very well take advantage of even the slightest mistake. That’s why Colorado will need to play the closest thing it can to a perfect game.
The Avalanche will be looking to get back into the series. A loss in Game 3 would essentially leave Colorado out of runway in the series.
