Avalanche could explore Makar extension during Olympics

The Colorado Avalanche can take advantage of the downtime during the Olympics to address a major issue before it's too late.

The Colorado Avalanche have an impending nuclear bomb waiting to go off. Cale Makar will enter the final year of his current contract in 2026-27. He’ll also be eligible to sign an extension on July 1, 2026.

That topic has come up from time to time but hasn’t really gained much traction.

But it will become a major distraction for the Avalanche if the team does not address it now. The Olympic break could give the Avs and Makar’s representation an opportunity to discuss a potential extension.

Now, I know what most fans will say. Makar is playing at the Olympics and won’t be bothered by extension talk.

While that much is true, the fact is that Makar’s representation won’t be on the ice. That could give the Avalanche an opportunity to test the waters, if they haven’t already. If the two sides have already discussed an extension, the NHL’s hiatus could be a solid opportunity to resume talks.

It’s tough to think that a handshake deal could be worked out during this time. Of course, it’s possible that the two sides could agree to a deal in principle and wait for July 1 to sign on the dotted line.

The likeliest outcome, however, is that the Avalanche and Makar’s people can work out a proposal. Once Makar returns from the Olympics, he can review the proposal and discuss it with his representation. If Makar gives the Avs the greenlight, well, July 1 could be a banner day for fans. But if there’s something that the reigning Norris Trophy doesn’t like or wants amended, the parties have plenty of time to iron out issues before July 1.

The point of this discussion is to take a proactive attitude. The Avalanche can’t afford to go into next season without Makar signed. The potential chatter could resemble the talk surrounding Connor McDavid or Artemi Panarin. Heading into training camp without an extension could needlessly cloud the Avalanche’s season. The longer the two sides drag out the issue, the worse it will get.

So, why not work out the deal now? The time is perfect for everyone involved to carefully consider the situation and reach a handshake deal, if possible.
