Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has a unique opportunity to cement his claim on a third Norris Trophy during the Olympics.
While the Olympics don’t count towards Norris Trophy voting, a good showing could push his case forward in the minds of voters.
The Olympics provide a unique opportunity for the NHL’s best players to showcase their talents on the world’s biggest stage. As such, a brilliant showing by Makar could permeate his dominance in the minds of voters.
In particular, the rivalry with Quinn Hughes could reach another level if and when Team Canada meets Team USA at some point in the tourney. Such a matchup would give Norris Trophy voters an opportunity to make apples-to-apples comparisons.
Think about last year. Makar had a solid showing at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Meanwhile, Hughes missed the tourney due to injury. In the end, it was Makar who took home the hardware.
It’s also worth pointing out that Zach Werenski had a great 4 Nations showing for Team USA. That likely boosted his case for a Norris Trophy nomination.
In that regard, the blueliners that stand out at the Olympics could leap to the forefront of voters’ attention. It’s also worth mentioning that the opposite could happen. Suppose Makar has an awful tournament. Such a situation could hurt his standing with voters.
Struggling at the Olympics would require a massive showing after the tourney to sway voters back to his side.
Bombing at the Olympics is unlikely for Makar. His performance at the 4 Nations was discreetly powerful. He led Team Canada in ice time, playing a strong two-way game. He’ll likely command the Canadian blue line at Milano-Cortina.
As such, this Olympic tourney could be nothing more than a premier chance for Makar to demonstrate why he’s the best defenseman in the world. Of course, winning a gold medal will certainly make his Norris case look even better.
