The Colorado Avalanche are a young team, and part of that dynamic is their prospect pool. Here’s a look at a home-grown draftee, JC Beaudin.
Jean-Christophe Beaudin (JC) is a Colorado Avalanche draftee from the 2015 NHL Draft. The team chose the center in the third round, #71 overall, in that draft.
Colorado signed Beaudin to his entry-level contract two years later, on March, 6, 2017. The contract is a standard three-year entry-level deal worth $816,667 at the NHL level (including signing and performance bonuses) and $70,000 at the AHL level.
JC Beaudin is set to attend the Rookie Camp and Rookie Faceoff next week. He also took part in last season’s Prospect Showcase, which took place in San Jose.
Let’s look at a Colorado home-grown prospect, JC Beaudin.
JC Beaudin Statistics
Position:Center
Shoots: Right
Age: 21
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 185 lbs.
JC Beaudin spent three years in the QMJHL playing for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. In that time, he recorded 87 goals and 138 assists. He also made the QMJHL All-Stars twice.
Last season, after signing with the Colorado Avalanche, Beaudin split his time almost evenly between the AHL San Antonio Rampate and ECHL Colorado Eagles. His first pro regular season was as bumpy as you might expect. He recorded two goals and five assists for the Rampage and seven goals, 20 assists for the Eagles.
His playoffs were a dream, though. The Colorado Eagles won the Kelly Cup. Beaudin played all 22 games. He recorded an impressive 10 goals and 8 assists in that time.
Here’s JC Beaudin talking about his Kelly Cup experience going into Game 7:
I’m not a huge fan of the mustache. However, I like Beaudin’s understated confidence.

JC Beaudin was too good for the ECHL last season. His nearly point-a-game production proved that last season. His AHL stats can be excused as rookie hiccups — not to mention the Avalanche sharing the team with the St. Louis Blues. (I never understood how that was supposed to work out.
Well, this season the Colorado Avalanche have their AHL team all to themselves. And it’s just up the road from the NHL team. So, when the Avs need to make callups, it’s not a hardship at all.
Beaudin looks like he’s more comfortable being a playmaker than a goal scorer, as evidences by his much higher assists than goals totals. That said, he brought the sauce in the playoffs. In fact, he always brings the sauce in the playoffs, dating back to his QMJHL days.
Will that be enough to earn a spot on the Avalanche roster? Probably not. Beaudin is fighting some stiff competition for a place on the NHL team’s roster.
Of course, that’s the lot of every prospect not drafted in at least the top 20 spots.
I think Beaudin needs to have a stellar Rookie Faceoff and training camp to impress the front offices. I think he also needs to make his second pro year in the AHL more impressive. That way, he may get the opportunity as one of the first call-ups in case of injury.
OTHER COLORADO AVALANCHE PROSPECT PROFILES:
Rookie Camp starts on September 7 in Colorado before the prospects head off to the Rookie Faceoff. I expect Beaudin will also be at the Training Camp that starts on September 14 and continues for four days. That’s his chance to shine.
