Trevor Cann
Drafted: Round 2, 49th overall | 2007 NHL Entry Draft
Highest Level: AHL
Avalanche Impact: N/A
When he was drafted by the Avs, who have, historically, struggled to draft and develop goaltenders, Cann had an opportunity to develop as the franchise was still navigating the early post-Patrick Roy years. Because of this, though, the Avalanche and then-affiliate Lake Erie Monsters were still in search of their next goaltending star, causing many prospects and roster-hopefuls to get lost in the proverbial sauce. Across the three years Cann spent in the Avalanche's system (from 2009-10 - 2011-12), the Avs and Monsters utilized a combined 16 goalies. In his first of those years, the Monsters utilized five goalies, four of whom played 13-or-more games.
Notable players selected after him: Wayne Simmonds (Kings, 61st), Evgeny Dadonov (Panthers, 71st), Alex Killorn (Lightning, 77th), Alec Martinez (Kings, 95th), Jamie Benn (Stars, 129th), Jake Muzzin (Penguins, 141st), Patrick Maroon (Flyers, 161st), Carl Hagelin (Rangers, 168th), Nick Bonino (Sharks, 173rd), Paul Byron (Sabres, 179th), Justin Braun (Sharks, 201st)
Peter Delmas
Drafted: Round 2, 61st overall | 2008 NHL Entry Draft
Highest Level: AHL
Avalanche Impact: N/A
Delmas found relative success at the junior level, but this never translated at the pro level. After failing to break into the Avs' system, he spent time playing in the AHL, ECHL, CHL (Central Hockey League, now defunct), and in college.
Notable players selected after him: Adam Henrique (Devils, 82nd), Braden Holtby (Capitals, 93rd), T.J. Brodie (Flames, 114th), Gustav Nyquist (Red Wings, 121st), Matt Calvert (Blue Jackets, 127th), Matt Martin (Islanders, 148th), Jared Spurgeon (Islanders, 156th), Cam Atkinson (Blue Jackets, 157th), Jason Demers (Sharks, 186th)
Spencer Martin
Drafted: Round 3, 63rd overall | 2013 NHL Entry Draft
Highest Level: NHL
Avalanche Impact: 2016-17 | 3GP, 4.35GAA, 0.865SV%
It's hard not to sympathize with Martin, whose first taste of NHL hockey came during the Avs' abysmal 2016-17 season. In three games with the team, he was largely hung out to dry by the floundering team rostered alongside him, and he would spend the majority of the next five years bouncing around in the minors before working his way into the back-up/3G roll for the Vancouver Canucks. He is now in the Carolina Hurricane's system.
Notable players selected after him: Brett Pesce (Hurricanes, 66th), Pavel Buchnevich (Rangers, 75th), Jake Guentzel (Penguins, 77th), Mattias Janmark (Red Wings, 79th), Anthony Duclair (Rangers, 80th), Carter Verhaeghe (Maple Leafs, 82nd), Oliver Bjorkstrand (Blue Jackets, 89th), Juuse Saros (Predators, 99th), Miles Wood (Devils, 100th), Andrew Copp (Jets, 104th), Carson Soucy (Wild, 137th), Dominik Kubalík (Kings, 191st), MacKenzie Weegar (Panthers, 206th)
