In a previous discussion, I focused on the idea of the Colorado Avalanche pulling off an unthinkable trade. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the years in sports and the business world, it’s that anything can happen at any time.
That said, the likelihood of trading Cale Makar would be right up there with an asteroid hitting the Earth. The odds might be in the billions, but it’s still a possibility.
Hyperbole aside, a Makar extension could happen at any time. It’s hard to fathom that the two sides would get to an irreconcilable point where a trade would have to happen.
In fact, if Makar wanted to get a deal done tomorrow morning, he would just have to call Joe Sakic and make it happen.
That’s essentially what happened with Connor McDavid last summer. McDavid was heading into a dreadful impasse regarding his extension, heading into the final year of his deal. He waited till late August to get the deal done, and that was that.
As such, Makar and Sakic may just be taking their summer easy before getting down to the matters of business. It might even be that there’s a handshake deal already done.
The only thing we’re waiting for is for pen to hit paper.
What could be holding up Makar extension?
Without being privy to insider discussions, I will venture into speculating what the hold-up for a Makar extension could be.
In short, it could very well be that Makar wants to take things easy following offseason shoulder surgery. The two-time Norris Trophy winner went through a lot this past season, playing with a major injury, and still helping the Avalanche to the Western Conference Final.
That’s why it wouldn’t be strange to suppose Makar just wants to lay low while he recovers. Once the team begins to ramp up for training camp, Makar and the Avalanche could sit down for a few minutes, work out an extension, and head to the ice.
If it sounds simple, it really is. Often, teams and players don’t take long to work a deal when there’s a full commitment on both sides to get it done.
McDavid and the Oilers were a good example of that. No drama, no fuss. Just a solid conversation leading to a new contract.
At least that’s what we’re all hoping for. The last thing the Avalanche need is the distraction that would become the uncertainty surrounding Makar’s next contract.
