Cale Makar is having another amazing season with the Colorado Avalanche. He now has 74 points in 61 games this year—24 goals and 50 assists.
In fact, Makar had the best game of the season Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. He put up two goals and helped on the other four goals by the Avalanche in the form of assists. It’s kind of funny in a way that he did so against a former teammate of his in Alexandar Georgiev, who we witnessed having another bad game, after making a bold statement recently. Would it have been cool to see him put up a six-point game against a quality team? Yes, but you play who’s on your schedule.
Prior to the Sharks game, Makar went five games without scoring a goal. From January 4 through January 16, Makar only contributed to assists, with zero goals in that time. Even still, he leads all defensemen in goals and assists, and is in the top-10 of all skaters in the NHL in total points.
He has pulled away from lower spots in those statistics, with Zach Werenski in second place with 66 points.

The Colorado Avalanche did what they showed up to do
Are we at the playoffs part of the season yet? Obviously, that is a rhetorical question, but with the way the Colorado Avalanche handled the Sharks Thursday night, it feels like they are ready for that playoff push.
Of course, we want to see the team put up such a performance against a competitive team. My favourite matchups for Colorado are ones against the Jets and Stars. Those games always provide thrill and excitement. We’re going to see the Avalanche match up against one of those two teams at some point in the postseason, I believe.
The Sharks are a great team to help a player such as Makar get on or continue a hoot streak. He can press the gas pedal at any moment, and he clearly did Thursday night. It’s a sign of great things to come from him, and therefore greatly benefits the Colorado Avalanche.
The most points by a defenseman in a single game is eight, done by Tom Bladon and Paul Coffey. I suspect that Makar has more games like this and have confidence in him to pull off an 8-point game sometime down the road.
The Avalanche‘s next three games are against the Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, and Wild. I’ll definitely be expecting some more stellar games from Makar going forward.
