Nobody said it would be easy, and it really hasn’t been for the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals against the Golden Knights. Down 2-0 in the series after Friday night’s loss, it’s going to take a miracle for Colorado to come back and at least even the series.
One of the real kickers is that these two losses have been at home. What good is home-ice advantage if you can’t get at least one win? Colorado has made it very tough on themselves as the series now heads to Vegas. Sure, it’s not impossible for them to steal a win and at least make the series interesting, but it’s a tough ask.
It is frustrating to have multiple power play opportunities and nothing to show for them, as was evident in Friday’s loss. They were 0-for-2. This is one of those cases where you really miss a guy like Cale Makar. Even having their top defenseman out there as a decoy would have been nice.
It’s simple, the Avalanche just haven’t been able to take advantage of their opportunities in these past two games. The Golden Knights have played extremely well, especially goaltender Carter Hart. Hart has been unbelievable, really.
I didn’t particularly hate much of how the Avalanche played, minus two of the three opportunities the Golden Knights scored on in the third frame. The mistakes made on those two plays, the Avalanche, and particularly Devon Toews, would like to have back.
Shockingly, Brent Burns led the team in shots on goal with five. The thing is, a lot of the shot attempts in this game missed the net. Colorado had a total of 51 shot attempts, but just 25 were on net. That is not going to cut it, especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The series isn’t over, but it sure feels like it is, with a tall order coming up. Down 2-0 in the series, the Avalanche have got to steal a win in Vegas.
