The Colorado Avalanche head into the weekend on a seven-game winning streak. Their Thursday night win over the New York Rangers has cemented the club’s hold on first overall in the NHL.

The Avalanche now have 33 out of a possible 40 points to highlight the quarter mark of the season. That’s not bad, especially given the injuries the team has sustained.

With that in mind, let’s dive into today’s Avalanche notes.

Avalanche get big home win over Rangers

The Avs landed a huge home win over the New York Rangers on Thursday. The win sent the Avs to the league’s current longest winning streak at seven. The game was close after 50 minutes. But the four-goal third period dashed any hopes the Rangers had of winning the game.

Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, and Martin Necas had three points apiece. Necas had three assists on the night, making him the most dangerous playmaker on the ice.

It’s also worth pointing out that goalie Scott Wedgewood notched his first career point. Wedgewood got credit for an assist on Brock Nelson’s sixth of the season. Nelson got a power play marker to put the Avs 3-2. While the Rangers tied the game midway through the final frame, the Avalanche pulled away.

MacKinnon milestone

Nathan MacKinnon had another milestone night. His three points moved him past Peter Stastny for second place on the team’s all-time list (Avalanche/Nordiques). His assist on the night also tied him with Stastny at 668. So, MacKinnon’s next assist will push him past Stastny for second place on the team’s all-time assist lead.

Rookie injured

On a down note, rookie Gavin Brindley left the game in the first period. Brindley got hammered along the boards at the midway mark of the first. He left the game with a lower-body injury, as Aarif Deen reported.

According to Altitude, Brindley attempted to return for the second period, but could not.

There is no indication of what Brindley’s injury situation is at this moment. But there is a tip off as the club recalled Jason Polin on Friday afternoon. So, it seems the Avalanche could be without Brindley for Saturday and Sunday’s matchups against the Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks.

Busy weekend ahead

A mentioned, the Avalanche will play a back-to-back set this weekend. The club will face two Central Division rivals, potentially widening its lead.

Scott Wedgewood and MacKenzie Blackwood will likely split the starts this weekend. Thereafter, the Avs will have a couple of days off before facing the San Jose Sharks at home on Wednesday night. Colorado will play another three-games-in-four-nights set next weekend.
