The Colorado Avalanche took care of business for the fourth-straight time against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday afternoon, officially sweeping the California team to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Following the win, the Avalanche’s X admin (Avsmin, as they call them) took to the social media platform and had their photoshop/Chat GPT skills on-hand.
This is both hilarious and fun to me. While Kings fans probably won’t like it or think it is funny, that’s understandable as they just saw their hockey team get swept.
This social media post is actually brilliant and it’s just so fitting. Scott Wedgewood was incredible in the four-game series, allowing just five goals in four games. He gave up two goals in Game 3, but held the Kings to one goal in each of the other three. In reality, Wedgewood kept the Avalanche in each and every game of the series.
Unfortunately, it took the Avalanche two games of boring hockey before they finally got things going an extra mile in Game 3 and 4. In the first two, they were only able to put up two goals each, the second game going into overtime. However, when it came to Games 3 and 4, they had four and five goals, respectively, including an empty-net goal to finish Sunday’s clinching win.
Wedgewood finished the series blazing hot like the California sun: He had a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.21, a save percentage of .950, with 101 saves in 247:28 of ice time. He was the team’s clear-cut MVP of the first series this postseason, especially given how ineffective the team’s offensive game had been for a good chunk of the series. Shockingly, Nathan MacKinnon had only 12 total shots in the entire series. Cale Makar had two goals on 12 shots.
However, as they say, it’s not how you win a game—It’s that you win a game. And the Avalanche managed to close out this series with relative ease. Wedgewood proved to be the team’s most important piece in the series, and here’s hoping that his teammates upfront will reward him with better play in the upcoming series against the Dallas Stars or Minnesota Wild.
