The Colorado Avalanche could be exemplifying the idea of the rich getting richer.

Last season, the Avs seemingly rolled through the regular season, not really facing much pressure on their claim to the league’s best record. There was a bit of a push from the Dallas Stars following the Olympic break, but that was about it.

Now, this upcoming season, it seems that the hockey gods have rewarded the Avalanche for their efforts. According to a strength of schedule ranking for next season, Colorado could have the second-easiest schedule in the league.

It may seem hyperbolic, but there could be some legs to that. The first major point is that the Avalanche will be playing 12 games in which they’ll be getting teams on the second leg of a back-to-back set.

That means facing tired teams and backup goalies.

While the Avs won’t get the highest number of such games this season, it will be much more than other teams.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche will play 10 back-to-back sets this upcoming season. That’s actually the third-fewest in the league.

So, would it seem like the NHL is somehow favoring Colorado?

Not necessarily. A lot of the wonky schedule has to do with the travel distance, time zones, and the desire for the league to schedule road trips within certain geographical time zones. So, it seems the hockey gods have smiled yet again.

So, it seems the Avalanche will have a sort of “easy” regular season. That’s something the Avalanche must capitalize on. If the team does not expect to have a grueling year, the team can take advantage of it and remain as rested and healthy as possible for the playoff gauntlet next spring.

That’s a crucial thought as we saw how the grind eventually caught up to the team this past season.

Moving forward, the Avalanche will need to exploit whatever advantages they get. If that means a less-than-grueling schedule, it’s something the organization will gladly take. Of course, we know the Avs are a deep team. The management group has made sure of it.

But it won’t hurt to get a little bit of a break. The NHL is a game of inches. An extra inch here or there could mean the difference between a Stanley Cup and going home empty-handed.

Avalanche fans know that very well. So, let’s see just how well the schedule favors Colorado this upcoming season. It seems that everything is shaping up well thus far.
