Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson loves horses, maybe almost as much as he loves hockey. Here are the best tweets about EJ and his horses.

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson is our cornerstone of the blueline. As you all probably know, Johnson is also an avid… horse racer? He’s actually started his own company, ERJ Racing. (For Erik Robert Johnson, presumably.)

Well, about a week ago, a two-year-old filly he co-owns won the Schuylerville States, a Grade 3 stakes race held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.

That’s pretty good stuff. You might remember that his horse named Landeskog… did not win a similar race a while back:

Water under the bridge because Johnson is most recently in the winner’s circle.

Here’s what Johnson said of the win:

"“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win at Saratoga. Hats off to the entire team that got her here. We’re excited to see what the future holds.”"

And here’s where we get to our first tweet because he said something hockey-related about the situation:

That’s one heck of a daily double. And, hey, the Colorado Avalanche are ranked within the top 10 right now across the board.

In fact, it’s a dream of Erik’s to bring the Stanley Cup to Del Mar, his first horse racing venue. He’s even flirted with the idea of letting his horses drink from the Cup’s bowl. That is sure to send THN’s Ken Campbell into conniptions.

Anyway, apparently Erik’s really into the whole of racehorse ownership. He has apps downloaded onto his phone that lets him get updates on every aspect of the business and the horses themselves. What’s more, he not only offers input on jockeys, he helps select which stallions will breed with his mares.

Here’s Johnson at the race in Saratoga:

And a little victory posing:

And some victory hugging:

A couple remarks. First, the man he’s hugging is Sol Kumin, a racehorse owner who even co-owns a recent Triple Crown winner, Justify.

Second remark: Erik, you’re at a swanky horse race as a Thoroughbred owner rubbing elbows with bougie people. If ever there was a time to put your teeth in, don’t you think this was it?

Of course, at one time he co-owned a horse named Toothless Wonder, so maybe it’s his signature.

Anyway, there’s no doubting Johnson is an animal lover, most especially horses:

Indeed, Erik says of his future aspirations:

"“When I’m done playing, I’d like to have a farm where I can put all my horses and live up there. I think that’d be sweet.”"

Well, not too soon, EJ. We still need your services.

I don’t know about you, but when I look at these photos, I look at Erik Johnson’s left shoulder. He had surgery on it right after the season ended. It doesn’t appear to be mobilized, and he’s not even wearing a sling.

And that hug on Kumin is pretty exuberant. I think we might well see our captain of the blueline playing for the Colorado Avalanche at the start of the season.
