The Colorado Avalanche social media team chronicled forward JT Compher’s first full season with the team.
The Colorado Avalanche social media team did such a great job of covering the team last season that I’ve been highlighting some of their best efforts.
Here is the “Best Tweets About” series so far:
Well, it’s J.T. Compher‘s turn. The team had some good tweets about our ginger forward.
We always start with the introductory video from the beginning of last season:
What’s notable about this video is that we get to hear the proper pronunciation of “Compher,” which is like the beginning of “comfortable,” rather than like “Straight Outta Compton.” Best buddy Tyson Jost even uses that pronunciation of JT’s nicknale, “Comphy,” which sound like “comfy.”
I also find it interesting that Compher wears the number he got at Colorado Avalanche training camp. He wears #7 for Team USA and wore #17 for the University of Michigan. That, of course, is Jost’s number now — Rene Bourque had it when the two came to the Avs.
Anyway, speaking of calling him a ginger, Mile High Sticking contributor Callie is a big JT fan — and loves to tease him about his hair:
Compher did plenty last season to earn her admiration. Here’s an example of JT scoring overtime game winners:
Compher also scored a pair of short-handed goals last season:
JT Compher was also active in the Colorado Avalanche’s community outreach programs. Here’s an example of Compher working with kids during the Playworks Extravaganza:
Here is information from the Playworks website about the program:
"“With Playworks developmental sports leagues, participants learn the ins and outs of street hockey. Through a combination of practice sessions and games, students learn how to defend, score, pass, and how to share the ice with their peers. Most importantly, participants learn how to be part of a team, act with sportsmanship, and show empathy for others.”"
Naturally, Compher was also an enthusiastic participant in the Avalanche’s Charity Brunch and distribution of teddy bears at Children’s Hospital:
In case you’re wondering, the “dry sense of humor” comment is related to that time JT came out of his shell on camera:
Compher had never done anything so puckish before. Since then, he yekked it up pretty good — including behind the camera:
Maybe Tyson Jost is the one who helped Compher come out of his shell. Our gregarious forward’s mirth is irrepressible — and contagious. Plus, he and JT are best mates:
Here’s an even more current example:
I love how Compher pretends not to notice Jost’s bad driving. But he doesn’t fail to notice Jost’s creeping on him:
It’s not as celebrated a friendship, but Compher and Kerfoot are also pretty tight:
I’m not sure about wearing jeans on the golf course, but I somehow think it’s similar to wearing them on the ski slopes. Oh well, JT, we know you’re capable of dressing up when necessary:
Though this isn’t a tweet, I want to share this picture of JT Compher:
It looks like he’s squeezing the spleen out of Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, an action I highly support.
JT Compher is entering the final year of his entry-level contract. The 23-year-old is considered part of the future of the Colorado Avalanche youth movement.
