Since Colorado Avalanche goaltender began the 2025-26 season as the team’s starter in palce of the then-injured Mackenzie Blackwood, talks of the former being named as an addition to the 2026 Olympics began to heat up. Those talks continued into Tuesday evening when analyst/commentator/journalist Darren Dreger put out a post on X regarding the very topic.
Dreger announced that Wedgewood was added to the list of players who will be in consideration for participation in the 2026 Olympics.
Wedgewood has really stood out as one of the team’s true MVPs early in the 2025-26 season. He has started 17 games so far, putting up a record of 13-1-0-2. His goals-against average if an unbelievable 2.09. I’ve mentioned in the past if anyone wasn’t quite sure, but a goals-against average (GAA) of below 3.00 is considered very solid. I don’t expect that to necessarily stay around 2.00, but right now, the Avalanche are winning games and that’s what matters.
I just wrote about the presence of Gabriel Landeskog and (hat tip to Daily Faceoff) how his presence on the ice has helped create a different vibe. Well, though it’s not quite the same, Wedgewood’s performances have really done a similar thing for the team. They’re hotter than any other team in the league and will fight for the President’s Trophy (most wins in the regular season).
Another hat tip goes to general manager Chris MacFarland, who brought Wedgewood and Blackwood in near the beginning of last season. It’s just a different vibe altogether. Everybody seems to be buying in to what’s going on in Colorado. To get the recognition Wedgewood just received is not a surprise, but it is very much welcome. He deserves not only to get the recognition, but to also officially be named to the 2026 Olympics. I don’t know when that will be announced, but fans will be on the lookout for #41 to add to his accolades.
