At some point, Colorado Avalanche backup goaltender Scott Wedgewood could be considered a household name. He could also make the contract decision by the Avalanche easier, as he’s in the second of a two-year deal. He has been amazing for the Avalanche since being acquired last season from the Nashville Predators and his start to the 2025-26 season is just adding to that fact.
Wedgewood has a 4-0-1 record this year in place of the injured Mackenzie Blackwood, and it appears likely that he will get yet another start on Tuesday when the Avalanche head to Utah to face the Mammoth. The Avalanche have an all-time record of 3-1-0 against Utah, and an all-time record of 57-32-4-10 against them when they were the Arizona Coyotes.
This past week—what we’re measuring here specifically—the Avalanche played three games, coming away with a victory in each one. First, they faced the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo a week ago and won 3-1. Then, they travelled to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets and left with a 4-1 win. Lastly, and most recently, they went home to host the Boston Bruins, winning 4-1.
His stellar play has rewarded him with being the third star of the week throughout the whole NHL, as credited by
Scott Wedgewood has been a brick wall for the Colorado Avalanche
Do you see a theme in the scoring through the week?
That’s right: the Colorado Avalanche only surrendered one goal in each of those past three games last week, and a lot of credit has got to go to Wedgewood.
His save percentages for each of those three games were: .964, .957, and .928. In the world of hockey, anything about a 90% save percentage is considered top level. When Wedgewood made his first couple of starts for the Avalanche after being acquired by the Nashville Predators last season, I was completely onboard with the trade. He sold me very fast and he continues to prove any doubters wrong.
Mackenzie Blackwood is getting closer to a return from an injury in which he had surgery for in the offseason. I still have a feeling, however, that Wedgewood is going to see his fair share of games going forward, especially if Blackwood is a bit rusty. There’s not a lot of options outside of the team’s two quality goaltenders. I would be pretty surprised if we saw Trent Miner at all. He’s really up on the Avalanche roster for insurance.
Recently, Wedgewood said that he has always viewed himself as a starter in the NHL. Maybe we do see more of him going forward, and not just in the next couple of weeks, but further down the road.
