The Avalanche are off to a hot start this season, with nine points through the first five games of the season, and zero regulation losses. The usual suspects are providing the offensive punch, as is in-season acquisition from last season, smooth-skating Martin Necas.
Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes last season for Mikko Rantanen in a shocking move by Chris MacFarland and Co., Necas has adapted well to the Avalanche free-flowing, creative style of offense.
Led by his speed and finesse ability, the 6’3” center iceman has come out of the gates on fire, with nine points in those five games – three goals coupled with six assists. The rest of the league has taken notice of both Necas’ and the team’s hot start.

TNT analyst and former NHL’er Paul “BizNasty” Bissonnette thinks Necas fits far better in Colorado’s style of play, as they are a puck possession type team, whereas Carolina is more of a dump-and-chase team. Necas’ speed through the neutral zone has made him a star thus far this season, and in a duo with superstar Nathan MacKinnon, Necas will make himself a lot of money.
A previous criticism of Necas’ play was that he’d play well for a period of games, but then “disappear” for another extended time. Keith Yandle, former NHL defenseman, stated Avs star Nate MacKinnon wouldn’t allow that perceived disappearance to occur due to the demanding approach he takes towards his teammates.
MacKinnon is known for his tenacity, his hard work, and holding both himself and his teammates accountable. It’s one of the reasons the team has been so successful over the last several seasons and will be helpful for a player like Necas to continue to push through any perceived breaks he may need.
It’s no secret the Avalanche need production from Necas. They’re counting on it. Necas himself is working towards a big-ticket contract, and the perfect storm may be in play for production from 88 this season, which obviously would benefit the burgundy and blue.
With Necas playing with stars like MacKinnon and Makar, his game will elevate simply by being around these players. Of course, the Avalanche hope the early returns on his Colorado career continue the trajectory both he and the team are on.
If all goes well, the opportunities for mutual benefit can happen: Necas gets his contract and the Avalanche lift some hardware in June.
The team needs to decide quickly, however, as each day that passes and each game Necas continues to absorb habits from the other players on the team just sends his stock higher.
MacFarland needs to provide Necas an offer he can’t refuse and keep him wearing burgundy and blue.
