The Colorado Avalanche are one of the top teams in the entire NHL. Sometimes, different sports kind of intersect and that’s exactly what happened on Thursday evening, when the Avs crossed paths into the NFL.
The NFL released the schedule for all 32 teams on Thursday. To fans’ surprise, one of those teams’ videos included a little dose of Avalanche.
The Los Angeles Chargers made headlines, and the one that really caught my eye was their Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Do you notice anything specific in this screenshot, posted by Avalanche radio host Conor McGahey? Dead in the center is “Week 8” along with the Avalanche’s logo. It’s a unique twist that initially had me puzzled until I realized the connection.
The Los Angeles Rams are owned by Stan Kroenke. Kroenke is also the owner of the Avalanche. Boom. There’s your connection.
Still, it’s a weird twist to add an NHL team into your schedule release video. If anything, it gets football fans to perhaps lock onto the NHL, and therefore the Avalanche getting new fans.
Kroenke became part owner of the Rams in 1995. He made the move to bring the Rams to St. Louis, Missouri, from Los Angeles, California, until 2016, when they moved back to L.A.
The number of teams/franchises Kroenke owns is actually insane. The list includes the Rams, Denver Nuggets, Avalanche, Arsenal F.C. (English Premier League), Arsenal W.F.C. (Women's Super League), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (National Lacrosse League), Los Angeles Gladiators (2023–Overwatch League), and the Los Angeles Guerrillas (2024 — Call of Duty League)
That’s right: Kroenke’s ownership doesn’t just lay in the world of sports. He also owned a couple of video game franchises. If that doesn’t add onto Kroenke’s “cool” level, I’m not sure what will. While those leagues eventually folded, one thing that doesn’t fold is Kroenke’s résumé.
He’s also the owner of many championships, including two with the Rams, two with the Avalanche, one with the Nuggets, one with the Colorado Rapids, two for the Mammoth, and one with the Guerrillas.
It’s cool to be a fan of a team whose owner has so much invested into different leagues. Heck, I didn’t even know that these video game leagues were ever a thing.
Well, there’s your history lesson for the day!
