Only a lineup as deep as Team USA’s would have Brock Nelson and Jack Hughes as fourth-liners. But that’s the embarrassment of riches the American side has at the 226 Winter Olympics.

Hughes scored Team USA’s sixth goal in their 6-3 win over Denmark on Saturday. Team USA pretty much locked up first place in Group C with their win on Saturday. The strong performance came from all over the lineup. All four lines came through, including the “fourth” unit.

A combination of Jack Hughes and Brock Nelson would be a top-line unit on any NHL team. And that’s something that could have Colorado Avalanche fans thinking “what if.”

What if Jack Hughes could team up with Brock Nelson on the Avalanche’s second unit? The chemistry between the pair is undeniable. It’s something that could easily carry over into the Avalanche as part of the club’s regular lineup.

Of course, the idea of Hughes and Nelson teaming up is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point. The Devils would hardly trade a star like Hughes. While the Avalanche would certainly love to have him in the lineup, fitting his contract could be more than challenging.

But then again, what’s wrong with dreaming of what could be? One of the most beautiful things about the Olympics is that players who you would have never thought could play together team up, even for a brief while.

Fans watching Team USA play, and Canada for that matter, are spoiled to see a generation of superstars team up. These are superstars that would never be in the same lineup otherwise.

That’s the thought of Hughes and Nelson. It would be a dream for Avalanche fans to see this duo hit the ice every game. While you should never say never, the likelihood of something like this happening isn’t very high.

So, it’s better to enjoy it now while it lasts.
