Martin Necas and the Colorado Avalanche needed just one day to erase any doubt that Thursday's massive contract extension was the right move.

Necas had a goal and two assists in the Avalanche’s 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights at the T-Mobile Arena in Vegas.

Necas opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. His stellar performance laid any lingering uncertainty to rest. In a way, it was like seeing a liberated Necas roaming about the ice, terrorizing the Golden Knights.

The weight on Necas’ shoulders must have been lifted on Thursday once his contract extension was officially announced. Necas now has no need to worry about his future. He’ll be in Colorado for the foreseeable future.

Plus, the strong superstar core around him is nothing short of spectacular. All-world stars Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar headline a group that has one of the best teams in the NHL. MacKinnon had an assist to go with a plus-3 rating. Makar, meanwhile, had a goal and an assist for two points in the game.

The Avalanche also got another strong performance from Scott Wedgewood. The Colorado Avalanche netminder stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win. Wedgewood’s outing was highly encouraging as he’s had a string of not-so-stellar games.

Overall, the Avalanche played a great game on Halloween, keeping the pumpkins at bay.

Burns gets first goal for Colorado Avalanche, makes history

Veteran blueliner Brent Burns got his first goal as a member of the Colorado Avalanche. The 40-year-old found the back of the net midway through the third period.

Here’s a look at the tally:

Burns buried a pass from Necas following a sick move by the Czech forward. The goal was Burns’ 916th career point, pushing him past the legendary Bobby Orr for 11th place all-time among NHL blueliners.

The feat was a testament to Burns’ outstanding career and his longevity in the game. The former Norris Trophy winner is 32 points away from the 10th spot belonging to Chris Chelios. Considering that Burns has racked up five points in 12 games this season, notching another 30 points or so shouldn’t be out of the question.

Burns has not hinted at retiring any time soon. So, the Avalanche blue liner could still have enough gas to pass a couple more blueliners on the all-time list before his playing days are done.
