Despite Nathan MacKinnon being focused on his Colorado Avalanche team’s season, the superstar took it upon himself to congratulate Colorado Buffaloes unique two-way player Travis Hunter on Saturday.
You can watch the short clip here:
If you don’t keep up with college football, Hunter is a wide receiver/cornerback for the Buffaloes. The Heisman trophy announcement was just made on Saturday, with Hunter as this year’s winner. Despite the Heisman voting race being very close, Hunter came out with the win, adding to his amazing college career.
Hunter had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. His average yards per reception comes out to 12.5. He also had 31 tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions, which he returned for a total of 65 yards.
It’s got to absolutely be an honour to get a shoutout from the best player in the NHL. In the thick of the NHL season, it could be likely that some players would choose not to take 10 seconds to congratulate somebody in another sport—or even the same sport. This, to me, should put MacKinnon in the good light of some people who might not care for MacKinnon (for whatever reason).
MacKinnon seems like the type of person who would do that for virtually anybody. If you notice during intermissions when they pull him aside for an interview, you can instantly tell that he just doesn’t necessarily care for that side of things. I’m not saying he won’t do them, but if you asked him about his own personal achievements, he wants none of that.
It would be cool to see him acknowledge his own greatness, but at the same time, I understand why he doesn’t. He’s a true team player. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get to see him make a video congratulating the Denver Broncos for a Super Bowl victory in the next couple of years. Let’s speak it into existence!
Now, Hunter’s goal is to be the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He would join MacKinnon as a first overall pick in the respective sport.
