When you think of Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, the idea of being starstruck comes to mind. As the best player in all of the NHL, there are many people across the world that look up to him. It’s a bit hard to imagine MacKinnon showing that same sort of perspective among other players in the league.
With that being said, MacKinnon showed his “starstruck” side while at the 2026 Olympics on Monday, and it has to do with the players he will share the ice with for Team Canada. The roster is so ridiculous that it would be a shock if they don’t win a gold medal.

Now, MacKinnon didn’t actually say the above quote as a giddy fan getting to meet players for the first time. That doesn’t mean that you can’t read it like that. It’s cool to see him mention about having to pinch yourself because of the incredible experience. I know what it’s like being a fan and getting to see some of your idols up close and getting to meet them. It’s one of the best feelings.
MacKinnon’s relationship with Sidney Crosby has been talked about for years. Crosby was previously linked to the Avalanche due to a questionable future with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the guy who started those rumors—Paul Bissonette— shut them down recently.
Still, MacKinnon gets to share the ice and be on the same side as his childhood friend for a couple of games in the tournament. Now, we don’t know what the lines will look like exactly, but during their first practice in Italy, they had Connor McDavid at first-line center, MacKinnon at second, Crosby at third, and Bo Horvat fourth. Still, it would be fun to see MacKinnon or Crosby out of position on the wing to share the ice.
How about MacKinnon on the same line as McDavid, who some view as the better player?
The lineup, however it may be presented, is just unfair all around. It would probably be viewed as an upset if Team Canada does not head home as the winners of the tournament. I’ve only mentioned four players on the team but yet there are several others that everybody will know about. It’s truly a treat to get to experience a talent-heavy Olympic hockey team.
MacKinnon won’t be the only starstruck person around either. I’m sure that every fan that gets to be in attendance for the games will have a blast as they’d get to see these superstars in person for the very first time and maybe their only time. I’m excited to see if the crowd comes through. I’m sure it will.
