The Colorado Avalanche could be taking care of a major piece of business on Thursday.
According to notable insider Elliotte Friedman, the Avs could be getting ready to announce a Cale Makar extension soon enough.

Going to be a biggie…but a critical piece of business for the Avalanche
The details are still vague at this point. There’s no telling when the deal is going to happen or how much the price tag will be.
But judging from the “biggie” descriptor, it suggests that we could be looking at a deal somewhere in the $16 million range and upwards.
If that’s indeed the case, there won’t be any issues here about whether Makar will give Colorado a hometown discount. The Avalanche will be paying up, and, well, that’s the way it should be.
The last thing the Avalanche want is for there to be any ill feelings in which Makar may be unsatisfied with his contract.
If and when the deal gets announced, which could be as soon as today, the speculation will finally come to an end. It will give the Avalanche some much-needed relief from what has been one of the most complicated issues facing the team in recent memory.
Several questions regarding Makar extension will be answered soon
There have been several questions surrounding a Cale Makar extension. The biggest one has been the sticker price. The Avalanche know it won’t be cheap to sign Makar. The question is just how far the extension will go.
Given the way NHL salaries have been trending, the Avalanche will be compelled to pay up. As mentioned earlier, we could be looking at $16 million AAV or perhaps more.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Colorado get up in the $18-million range, considering what younger, unproven stars have gotten these days.
Also, there’s the question of term. How long will this deal last? Considering that the Makar extension is likely to go through before the Collective Bargaining Agreement kicks in, there’s hope that it could be an eight-year extension.
We shall see. All of these questions are nothing more than speculation at this point. The Avalanche and Makar will clear up uncertainty soon enough. As long as both sides are able to end speculation once and for all, Avalanche fans will feel satisfied that a deal gets done.
The hardest part now will be waiting to see when the next bit of news drops. It’s unclear when, but the sense is that it might happen at any time.
