Team Canada star Nathan MacKinnon has a unique chance to step up at the 2026 Winter Olympics. It’s not that he hasn’t already done so. His game-tying goal in Wednesday’s win over Czechia is proof of his timely production.
It’s the gap created by Sidney Crosby’s injury that gives MacKinnon a singular chance to take the lead for Team Canada.
Crosby left Canada’s quarterfinal game on Wednesday after taking an awkward hit from Czechia defender Radko Gudas in the third period. Crosby did not return to the game. In the end, it was Mitch Marner who picked up the slack and scored the game-winner.
That said, Canada will be looking to MacKinnon to fill some big shoes. Those shoes boil down to both scoring and leadership. While the Colorado Avalanche superstar has not let Canada down, the team will be looking for MacKinnon to set the tone, much like Crosby has all these years.
Canada will square off against Finland in the semi-finals at Milano-Cortina. The Finns have overcome some early tournament hiccups to bounce back and earn a shot at a medal at this year’s Olympics.
MacKinnon living up to expectations
Last year, MacKinnon was Team Canada’s most valuable player at the 4 Nations Face-Off. That achievement carried over into this year’s Olympics. Thus far, MacKinnon has lived up to the hype. His game-tying goal on Wednesday was another notch on his belt.
While it’s worth pointing out that playing with Connor McDavid has been absolutely phenomenal, MacKinnon has delivered when needed. That’s why MacKinnon has done nothing short of live up to expectations in the tourney.
Crosby’s absence now gives MacKinnon the added responsibility of leading Team Canada to what could be one of the most historic gold medals. The 12-year shortage of NHLers at the Olympics could make this particular medal intensely special.
If previous Olympic tournaments are any indication, this year’s could be a doozy. The Canadian side enters as the favorites in the semi-final round. But with the high level of competition, every player will need to do their part to earn a shot at the gold medal.
Nathan MacKinnon could be just the guy Team Canada will be looking to earn a huge win against Finland.
