Landeskog can’t catch a break, even when Colorado Avalanche keep rolling

The Colorado Avalanche kept rolling on Thursday night, getting a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres at Ball Arena. The game featured a wild first period that saw the Avs chase Buffalo starter Alex Lyon after scoring twice on their first three shots on goal.

Amid the hubbub of the crazy opening frame, Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog scored a goal late in the period, or at least everyone thought he did.

With less than a minute to go in the period, Landeskog buried a rebound to make the game 4-2. During the celebration, the officials waived the goal off. The call was goalie interference on Jack Drury in front of the net.

Here’s a look at the play:

Drury can be seen pushed into the Sabres' goalie, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who replaced Lyon in the first. Since Luukkonen was unable to slide across to make the same, the goal was waived off. The Avalanche challenged, but to no avail.

Landeskog got his first regular-season goal in three years a few nights ago. But he just can’t catch a break. Landeskog has had several goals already waved off this season. If all of those had counted, Landeskog could be challenging Nathan MacKinnon for the team lead.

While annoying, the no-goal call didn’t really matter as the Avalanche won the game anyway.

Necas runs wild as Colorado Avalanche remain atop NHL standings

The biggest story of the night was Martin Necas. He scored twice and added two assists for four points. Necas scored a fantastic breakaway tally to open the scoring.

Here’s a look as shown on the Avalanche’s official X account:

The goal was a harbinger for the Avalanche. While the Sabres hung tough in the early going, the Avalanche pulled away. The shots were even at six apiece in the first period, but then Colorado took over. Colorado outshot the Sabres 12-8 in the second and then 16-7 in the third to fully take over the game.

The Sabres deserve credit as they went into the second intermission down by a goal. But then Gavin Brindley got his fourth of the year, with Necas icing the win with his second of the night.

MacKenzie Blackwood overcame a bit of a shaky first period to make 18 saves for his second win of the season.

It was all smiles on Thursday night for the Avalanche. The club has now won five in a row and looks like the team to beat this season. The focus will now turn to the New York Islanders, who will be in town for a Sunday night tilt at Ball Arena.
