The Colorado Avalanche have been riding with goaltender Scott Wedgewood between the pipes for the first five games of the 2025-26 Stanley Cup playoffs. Wedgewood is getting the go-ahead once again for Game 2 against the Minnesota Wild, but head coach Jared Bednar is feeling confident in both of his goalies.
On Tuesday, Bednar mentioned that he makes decisions on who to start partially from conversations he has with both options throughout the day and how he “can’t just go off of conventional thinking, like, it’s only one goalie. For me, that’s not how our team operated all year and we had a lot of success. So, I feel comfortable going with either guy. I’ll have reasons why I go to one guy and reasons why I’d go to the next one.”
Wedgewood’s overall numbers don’t look quite as good as before Game 1 of the series vs the Wild, but that game was just crazy altogether. The Avs won 9-6 with Wedgewood in net. The Wild just played pretty solid, but so did the Avalanche’s scorers. In fact, Cale Makar was the only scorer of the evening to have multiple goals. Every other one of them had one apiece, which really shows how much of a flow they were offensively.
It has to feel extremely good for Wedgewood to have the confidence of the head coach. It would have looked pretty bad, in my opinion, if Bednar went straight to Blackwood after Wedgewood allowed six goals.
Wedgewood took over for the most part for the 2025-26 regular season as Blackwood was recovering from a surgery, so he got plenty of time to get comfortable in the starters crease. It’s led to some pretty phenomenal play in Round 1 against the Los Angeles Kings, and while it didn’t look great in Game 1 vs the Wild, Wedgewood will look to recover from that crazy game.
It’s not quite Blackwood’s time, and as long as the Avalanche keep winning, Wedgewood could remain in the crease. But, either way, Bednar is happy with both options, and that should excite Avalanche fans.
