Colorado Avalanche blue liner Cale Makar won the 2025 Norris Trophy in a landslide victory. Makar took home his second-career Norris, getting the nod over Columbus Blue Jackets star Zach Werenski and Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes.

As soon as the news of Makar’s win hit the news cycle, fans took to social media to pay tribute to the Avalanche’s star defenseman.

Here’s a look at what these fans had to say:

“GOAT MAKAR,” a fan opined.

“Makar should be getting the Norris every year. Best Dman in the game by a mile 🐐” this fan weighed in.

“Most obvious choice ever. Well deserved,” another fan commented.

Meanwhile, other fans took advantage of the opportunity to pour cold water on Cale Makar’s singular accomplishment.

Let’s have a look at what these fans had to say:

“Yeah yeah no MacKinnon no Norris,” a fan chimed in.

“Is this trophy for the Defenseman who regularly turns over the puck on his own blue line, resulting in a breakaway and/or goal against?” this fan remarked.

“Congrats but would have rather you showed up in the playoffs. Even if you were average we get by Dallas. Unfortunately, you stunk it up,” another fan wrote.

Cale Makar captured 176 first-place votes to Werenski’s 13. Hughes got the other two first-place votes, making the results a clear victory for Makar this season.

Cale Makar joined elite company this season, posting his second 90-point season. With the remarkable total, he’s the fifth NHL blue liner to do so.

Last season, Makar tallied 21 goals and 69 assists for 90 points. He followed that tremendous season with another stellar campaign this year, tallying 30 goals and 62 assists for 92 points.

Makar joins Paul Coffey who racked up seven 90-point seasons, Bobby Orr who had six, Ray Bourque with four, Denis Potvin with three, and Al MacInnis with two.

As Cale Makar continues to evolve as a player, a 100-point season could be on the horizon for the 26-year-old. The Colorado Avalanche have the firepower to help him get there, while defense partner Devon Toews is among the NHL’s best defensive defensemen.

With that sort of support around him, Makar could top the century mark in the coming seasons. There’s no reason to believe he couldn’t do it, barring an injury that could potentially slow him down at some point.

Makar, astonishingly, is just now entering his prime. So, there’s still plenty of time for him to grow into one of the NHL’s all-time best defensemen.
