Elliotte Friedman’s latest on Dylan Larkin would be unfortunate news for the Avalanche

Dylan Larkin might not become a member of the Colorado Avalanche, but he could end up playing them a lot.

Just a couple of days ago, Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin requested a trade. It would be awesome for the Colorado Avalanche to explore the idea of acquiring him, but that doesn’t seem very reasonable, in my opinion. However, the latest from Elliotte Friedman might make Avs fans uneasy.

Friedman is saying that he’s hearing Larkin being linked to teams a couple of teams, including two in the Central Division.

"I think he wants to go to an established power, like a Minnesota, a Tampa, or a Dallas. I think those are three of the teams I’m hearing a lot."
Elliotte Friedman on Dylan Larkin rumors

That would be very unfortunate as Larkin is one of the top centers in the league. Though he isn’t in the same tier as Nathan MacKinnon or Connor McDavid, he is still a threat to opponents. Acquiring him would cost a boatload, including a first-round pick, other draft compensation, and a player or two.

In that case, it would be cool to see an Avs rival go after Larkin, as they would be giving up a lot. They would be surrendering the future for the “now.”

But, those teams would also have to ask the question of whether or not they are one player away from a Stanley Cup appearance. The Stars could be. The Wild, I’m not so sure about that one. Still, acquiring Larkin wouldn’t hurt that much as they would be getting a player who can make an immediate impact.

If Larkin ends up in thet Central Division, the Colorado Avalanche might feel the need to counter the move and add some more talent. While they are set with MacKinnon, Brock Nelson and Nazem Kadri on their first three center spots, they could find a way to acquire a depth winger.

Though I like Parker Kelly, the Avalanche could maybe figure out a player to trade him for. Joel Kiviranta is another guy who I could see the team move, though it’s hard to see the Avalanche getting much for him.

Another idea is that Colorado will likely need to add some defensive help as Brent Burns is scheduled to hit free agency and very well could retire.

Hockey is like a game of chess. When your opponent makes a move, you are almost certainly forced to make one yourself. That’s what could happen to the Colorado Avalanche if Dylan Larkin enters the division.
