It’s hardly classified information that the Colorado Avalanche have had some unusually poor games this season. A great example of that was Sunday night’s 6-2 loss to the Nashville Predators.

That situation has Elliotte Friedman concerned about Colorado’s “weird” early-season losses.

In Monday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the notable insider raised questions about struggling contenders. He singled out the Avalanche, given how there have been a handful of games already this season that have left fans and pundits scratching their heads.

“Colorado and Vegas have both had some really weird losses lately, like really strange stuff. I generally don’t worry about those two teams because they’re really good teams, but weird losses early in the year.”

No, we don’t generally lose any sleep over the Avalanche, either. But Friedman does have a point. Sunday night’s no-show was just one of several games.

If you look at the back-to-back losses in Philadelphia and New Jersey, Colorado just didn’t show up for those games. There was also the perplexing loss at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Yes, the Avalanche are still fairly safe in postseason territory. But you have to think that something is up.

Jared Bednar’s postgame comments offer no consolation

Following Sunday night’s stinker, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar looked like a kid who got called into the principal’s office.

His comments, unfortunately, did not show any sort of answer for what has been ailing the Avalanche this season.

"We should have been the team with more energy... with (Nashville) playing the back-to-back on the road and us here waiting for them. It looked like it was the exact opposite."

Well, it’s Bednar’s job to figure this one out soon.

Imagine something doesn’t go well at work, and your boss asks you what’s going on. Would say to your boss, “Oh, I need a few days to think about it.”

I don’t know about you, but in my experience, my boss would chew my head off following an answer like that.

Yes, there are situations in which no one really has an answer. That posture would fly if this were the first stinker for the Avs this season. However, it’s becoming a concerning trend, one that needs immediate attention, especially from the team’s head coach.

The prospects ahead don’t look particularly encouraging. The likelihood of facing notable Avalanche killer Connor Hellebuyck is looming, as the New Jersey Devils will be in town next Wednesday. Colorado will have a couple of days to regroup and reset.

If the team cannot figure things out against the Devils, some serious questions will begin to emerge.
