The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Taylor Makar, the brother of Cale Makar, to a 1-year contract on Monday. He spent this past season at the University of Maine, where he played in 38 games, recording 18 goals and 12 assists. Prior to heading to Maine, he played for the University of Massachusetts for three seasons.
He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Avalanche in 2021.
While I’m sure many people want to see him on the ice soon for the Avalanche, he’ll head to the Eagles for the remainder of the season. There, he can see where he fits in most with the team and continue to develop chemistry with players that he could potentially play alongside with the Avalanche in the future.
The Eagles’ next game is on Wednesday, April 2, against the Coachelle Valley Firebirds. They are currently in first place in the Pacific Division with 84 points and despite losing their last two games, they have a 7-3 record in their last 10 games. It would be epic to see Makar join the Eagles and have an immediate impact with them. That would probably seem to help his case of getting some playing time with the Avalanche later down the road. At this point, however, we’ll see how it goes. It’s not easy to make an NHL roster—and it’s especially difficult to make the Avalanche’s roster, without injuries being a main reason.
The next step for Taylor Makar potentially making the Colorado Avalanche roster in the future
The Avalanche can experiment with different line combinations at any point. They did it early in the season and they are still doing it as situations change on a nightly basis. I could see Taylor Makar fitting in on the fourth line, mainly because I’m not quite sold that Jared Bednar is fine with Jimmy Vesey there. Vesey is also currently scheduled to hit free agency at the end of the year. Whether he returns or not could be a good sign for the younger Makar brother.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to see some sort of line combination with both Makars on the ice at the same time? Now, that is an idea that likely won’t actually happen at any point, unless there are injuries to players on the same power play or penalty kill unit as Cale Makar currently is on.
Either way, having his younger brother in the mix should feel really good for Cale. Hopefully things pan out for Taylor as he tries to work his way up into the NHL.
