The Colorado Avalanche pulled out a gutsy 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at Ball Arena. The Lightning got an early 1-0 lead on the Avalanche on a goal by Nikita Kucherov.
Colorado seemed flat-footed as Tampa came out humming. But then, Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog did the talking… with his fists.
The captain took on young defenseman Charle-Edouard D’Astous in a lopsided tilt. Here’s a look at the bout as shown on B/R Open Ice:

Landeskog got a decisive victory over the Tampa Bay challenger. Most importantly, the fight lit a fire under the team. The Avs came back to tie the game later in the period on Victor Olofsson’s fourth of the year.
The fight came at a crucial juncture as the Avalanche risked falling too far behind early in the game. Instead, Landeskog’s pugilistic abilities allowed the club to rally and get a much-needed win over a highly talented club.
Kudos to the captain for getting a big win with his fists and an assist in the game.
Wedgewood continues to dazzle for Colorado Avalanche
Scott Wedgewood had another fantastic game for the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. The Avs’ netminder made 22 saves on 234 shots, including a barrage down the stretch. The Lightning threw everything at the Avs, including the kitchen sink, as they tried to tie the game.
But Wedgewood stood tall and held the fort. The game seemed more like a replay of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, in which these two teams went head-to-head.
The Avalanche defense deserves a ton of credit as they sacrificed life and limb to keep the lead. One huge block came from Cale Makar in the final minutes. The Avalanche’s superstar defenseman put himself in the way of a rocket from Victor Hedman.
Makar was in visible discomfort following the play. But it was the sacrifice that allowed the Avalanche to preserve the win.
Wedgewood did his part to shut the door down the final seconds, giving the Avalanche 21 points on the season and a clear lead in the NHL standings as the league’s top club.
