As likeable as Cale Makar is, it’s not surprising to see that there is a fanbase out there willing to run him out of town.
But what is surprising is that fan base is not in traditional Colorado Avalanche rival territory like Texas or Minnesota. As we outlined in a previous piece, that’s where Nathan MacKinnon is public enemy #1.
Other Colorado rivals like St. Louis, Winnipeg, Chicago, or Nashville have other top enemies.
Surprisingly, Washington, home of the Seattle Kraken, is where Makar is persona non grata.
A study by Rotowire revealed the most hated players across the United States and Canada. And shockingly, Kraken fans despise Makar.
But why Makar? Why not a division rival like Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid?
Well, it seems that the dislike for Makar comes from the Kraken’s only playoff appearance in 2023. While the Kraken upset the Avalanche in that series, it seems that the Kraken fanbase did not develop a particular fancy for Makar.
Based on the data, it’s safe to say that the last team Cale Makar would ever play for is the Kraken. While Makar isn’t likely leaving Colorado anytime soon, even if he did, it doesn’t seem like Seattle would welcome him with open arms.
No news on Makar extension front
At the moment, it’s radio silence on the Cale Makar extension front. While other markets would be blowing up with the lack of advancement on the matter, Colorado seems relatively tranquil.
The absence of certitude regarding Makar’s next contract could become something that might hang over the Avalanche this season. And it wouldn’t be fun for the Kraken fanbase to see Makar leave the Western Conference.
There hasn’t been the slightest inkling that Makar would leave Colorado. But you have to wonder what the hold-up could be. We’ve already seen RFAs blow up the market with massive contracts this summer.
But it might just be that there’s a game of chicken going on between Makar and Quinn Hughes. It could be that both camps are waiting for the other to sign first. Whoever signs first will serve as a comparable for the other.
If that’s the case, we might have to wait a bit longer. Hughes’ future in Minnesota is much less certain than Makar’s in Colorado. It would have to take a significant externality for Makar to walk away.
However, the concern will increase the longer this issue drags on. If Connor McDavid’s extension is any indication, it’ll get done well ahead of training camp, burying the issue once and for all.
