Colorado Avalanche newcomers Brock Nelson and Charlie Coyle hit the ice on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nelson, who was part of a blockbuster trade deadline deal with the New York Islanders, immediately paid dividends, registering his first point as an Avalanche.
Nelson assisted on Valeri Nichushkin’s goal of the first period, at 6:08. Here’s a look at the tally:

Nichushkin opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. However, the Leafs came back to tie the game on Mitch Marner’s 20th of the season. After Nichushkin made it 2-1, John Tavares tied the game, before Marner got his second of the period to give the Leafs a 3-2 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Avalanche newcomers have already made their presence felt on the ice, especially after the whirlwind last 48 hours. So far, Nelson has been all over the ice, generating various opportunities, and hitting the post on one shot.
It seems like Nelson has hit the ground running, looking to become a difference-maker for his new team.
Charlie Coyle gets first point in Colorado Avalanche uniform

The goal came on a quick reaction from Coyle who found an open Jonathan Drouin, who buried the puck past Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
The goal was Drouin’s ninth of the year. Meanwhile, Coyle got his eighth assist of the year with Ross Colton getting the other assist on the goal.
Drouin’s goal was part of a three-goal third period that was punctuated by Valeri Nichushkin’s first career hat trick. Nichushkin iced the game for the Avalanche, sealing a comeback win.
The Avs were down 4-2 midway through the second period but came back with five unanswered goals to claim an entertaining 7-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
MacKinnon gets 100th point of the season
Nathan MacKinnon got two goals on the night, notching his 100th point of the season on an empty-net goal in the dying seconds of the third period. MacKinnon is on pace to claim his first career Art Ross Trophy, leading the Avalanche in a dominant third period over a Leafs team that was unable to hold the lead down the stretch.
Overall, the Avalanche impressed in their first post-deadline game, with old faces and new ones doing their part to help the club climb back to the top of the Central Division standings.
