The Colorado Avalanche have gone through a general manager change, after Chris MacFarland bolted to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. They reappointed Joe Sakic the position, one he held prior to MacFarland’s promotion.
MacFarland was highly persued by the Predators, which the Avalanche were fully aware of. That resulted in Colorado pushing real hard to try and keep MacFarland in town. Reports are saying that the team the Avs made “significant counter offers” to keep MacFarland. In the end, he chose a different team to go to.
MacFarland agreed to a six-year deal with the Predators to become their general manager, as well as their president of hockey operations. In Colorado, Sakic held the title of president of hockey operations. So, MacFarland will have a lot more on his plate, which will result in a major raise than what the Avalanche would have been offering him to remain with them.
Thankfully, the Avalanche are familiar with their newest general manager, as Sakic had previously held the same role before stepping in to a bigger role (POHO) and naming MacFarland the GM. Now, he gets to do both. Unless the Avs find someone else for either job, Sakic will have plenty of things to do for the team. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets/already got a raise following the recent events.
The Avalanche have several former players on its staff, with Andrew Cogliano being the special assistant to the general manager and Pavel Francouz as an assistant for the team in a goaltending scout and development role.
It will be fun to see what sorts of things are in the horizon for the Avalanche following the general manager change. Familiarity is a great thing no matter what you work in, and especially sports. It’s all a team effort and I expect it to go smoothly with Sakic in that role once again.
