Avalanche should be part of larger Denver sports scene like Broncos’ next location

The Colorado Avalanche and Denver Broncos have been neighbours for a number of years. In 2031, however, that is expected to change, as the Broncos named Burnham Yard as their preferred destination for a new stadium.

The Avalanche have been in the same arena since they arrived from Quebec in 1995. Along with the Denver Nuggets, Ball Arena has been their home since 2000-01.

With some of the richest owners in all of the NFL, it makes sense that they would want to make a move if they feel it would benefit themselves—Even though they spent a ton of money on a new practice facility very close to the one they have used over the past couple of years.

Even if the Avalanche leave Ball Arena, who says it would be in a different city in Colorado? They could make a move like the Broncos did—build a new arena around 50-feet away from their current location.

It’s really about making improvements in the arena. I admit it’s been many years since I visited Ball Arena. It may have even been called the Pepsi Centre the last time I was there. But maybe a new arena could feature better and more seats, more advanced technology, different types of stores inside the arena itself that could bring in revenue, and maybe a desired tailgating location for fans for pregame.

I understand that it could be a benefit for both Kroenke and the Walton-Penners (Broncos owners) to be close by each other. That gives both groups a chance at more traffic due to the fact that there could be hockey and football games on the same day—usually at much different times in the day, not at the same time. Fans can head to a football game and then catch a hockey game later in the day. It’s a win-win.

The idea of traffic would also make a move closer to the Broncos’ new stadium much more appreciated. Even though Burnham Yard isn’t that far away, it’s further than the two stadium/arena locations are from each other right now.

The Avalanche could explore a move to Burnham Yard

I would expect the Broncos to remain at Burnham Yard for quite a few years before considering another move. That gives the Avalanche time to finish out their current contract, which expires in 2050. That is a long time from now but perhaps that time will create the thought that move might be necessary.

The fact that a move out of Ball Arena likely isn’t in the cards for several decades gives the Avalanche plenty of time to analyze the Broncos’ successes once they head over there in that expected move. Maybe businesses will continue to boom out there. Or maybe another opportunity arises. Whatever happens, the Avalanche will continue to have a strong fanbase that will go to games no matter where their arena is.

In a world focused heavily on profit, I would not exclude a move out of the possibilities in the future. I truly don’t think that a location change would hurt the team.
