Avalanche’s throwback Nordiques uniforms need to unfortunately go away

Fans waited a long time for the Avalanche to reveal their throwback uniforms, but they should be shortlived.

The Colorado Avalanche debuted their Nordique throwback uniforms on October 23, 2025 in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. For that game, Carolina wore their Hartford Whalers throwbacks to match the theme of the night.

They have worn these throwback uniforms six times so far, with their final appearance with them being on April 11 against the Vegas Golden Knights.

While the trip down Memory Lane has been cool for fans who got to watch the Quebec Nordiques back in the day, this season is an indicator that perhaps leaving those uniforms in the rearview mirror might just be the better idea.

Now I understand what some of you would be thinking. Not everyone believes in superstitions, especially one as silly as performing poorly because of the uniform you are wearing. However, the proof is in the pudding.

Allowing an average of 5.14 goals against per game is atrocious. It’s no wonder they have such a bad record wearing them. Sure, it could be traced down to the point that teams can lose on any given game day, but it’s just hilarious how much better they have played while wearing one of their regular uniforms.

At the very least, the idea that the uniforms are cursed is a fun, silly topic. At most, maybe they are truly cursed and the Avalanche have a chance to add onto the win column on April 11th. The Avalanche are playing for seeding at this point, after recently clinching a playoff spot.

Vegas has four games remaining before their matchup against the Avalanche, including Thursday night against the Vancouver Canucks, who had their way with Colorado on Wednesday evening.

Akira Schmid has played the most games at netminder for Vegas, posting a 29-16-10 record with a goals-against average of 2.59, by far the team’s best. He has the best save percentage of all goalies on Vegas, though it is abysmal at .893.

This is a game that the Avalanche should skate away with the victory, but we said the same exact thing against the Flames, and look at how that turned out. Going forward, there has to be no assumptions about games the Avalanche should win, because you just never know. That’s what Wednesday night taught me.

Regardless of whether or not the Avalanche win their final game this season wearing the throwback uniform, it just hasn’t been their year when it comes to doing so. Maybe they will have better luck during future seasons, but at this point, it needs to go away.
