The Colorado Avalanche continued their winning ways on Monday night. This time, the victim was the LA Kings. The Avs notched a 5-2 win at Ball Arena, leaving little doubt as to why they’re the best team in the NHL at the moment.

The tilt was the Avalanche’s second-last game of 2025. With one more contest to go before the calendar turns to 2026, let’s dive into this edition of the Avalanche news.

Avalanche extend streaks

So, the win over the Kings extended two winning streaks for the Avalanche. First, the win was Colorado’s eighth in a row. The win improves the Avs’ overall record to 29-2-7 for 65 points. That’s an eight-point advantage over the Dallas Stars, who have lost two straight.

The win also saw the Avs extend their home winning streak to 14 games. On the season, the Avalanche are 16-0-2, officially remaining undefeated in regulation.

However, the team record is still some ways away. The club record for consecutive home wins is 18, set during the 2021-22 season. The Avs would need four more home wins to tie the mark. After Wednesday’s road game against the Blues, the Avs will have a three-game homestand starting on January 3.

Then, the Avalanche will head off on a seven-game road trip before returning for a four-game homestand against Eastern Conference clubs. Assuming the winning streak continues, the Avs could tie the mark against the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 25 and break the mark against the Ottawa Senators on January 28. So, that’s something certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Power play struggles against Kings

Despite the strong offensive output, the Avalanche’s power play continues to struggle. The Avs went 0-for-4 with the man advantage on Monday night. That’s a tough pill to swallow. The Colorado is now tied with Toronto for the 26th-best power play in the league at 15.5%.

Nevertheless, it’s impressive to see just how powerful the Avalanche’s offensive production has been in spite of the poor power play. The last thing the NHL needs right now is the Avalanche power play to get rolling on top of what they have already produced.

Colorado will need to boost its play with the man advantage, especially by the time the postseason rolls around.

Blackwood solid again

Monday night was just another day at the office for MacKenzie Blackwood. He stopped 23 of 25 shots, backstopping his club to the win.

Blackwood now has 12 wins in 15 games to go with his 2-15 GAA and .924 SV%. Blackwood is now third in the NHL in GAA, behind teammate Scott Wedgewood and Carolina Hurricanes’ netminder Brandon Bussi. Bussi leads the league with a 2.08 GAA.

Meanwhile, Blackwood is now second in the NHL in SV%. He leapfrogged Wedgewood, while remaining seven percentage points behind the current NHL leader, Jesper Wallstedt of the Minnesota Wild.

At this rate, the Avalanche goalies are on track for the Jennings Trophy, with Blackwood inching himself higher up on the Vezina Trophy conversation.
