The Colorado Avalanche hometown remix jerseys might be pointing to something interesting, amid a “leaked” version of the designs.
The NHL has planned yet another marketing effort, creating so-called “hometown remix” jerseys, similar to MLB’s City Connect series. These are alternate jerseys that teams will likely wear once or twice a year.
And like MLB fans, their NHL counterparts will have their thoughts about the designs. But what seems interesting about the Avalanche’s kit is the fact that #29 MacKinnon appears wearing the “C.”

The design itself is pretty cool. They will no doubt sell out quickly. But the broader question is: Why on Earth would anyone create the jersey with MacKinnon’s name as captain?
We can attempt to explain this situation with Occam’s Razor. The Avalanche captain is Gabe Landeskog, who wears #92. That just so happens to be the reverse of #29, Nathan MacKinnon. Could it be that whoever made the design had a brain spasm and didn’t realize that the captain was 92 and not 29?
It’s possible that it’s just a human error. But if we really wanted to get conspiratorial for a minute, wouldn’t someone in the Avalanche organization notice the apparent mistake?
Could Avalanche hometown remix design hint at a change in captaincy?
In keeping with the conspiracy theory, could it be that the Avalanche are getting ready to announce a new captain?
Specifically, could it be that MacKinnon is getting ready to become the successor to Landeskog?
On the surface, that’s a hair-brained idea. Landeskog still has two more years on his current deal after this season. Moreover, even if Landeskog were willing to pass the torch, there’s no way that MacKinnon would accept it.
The Avalanche are not about to do what the Toronto Maple Leafs did, in stripping John Tavares of his captaincy to give it to Auston Matthews just because he was the team’s superstar. I daresay the Avalanche are not remotely as petty as that.
Otherwise, wouldn’t the organization have anointed MacKinnon captain when Landeskog was still out with that knee injury?
The team played three seasons without a captain, holding out hope that Landeskog would return. And when he did, the “C” went right back where it belonged.
All told, since the designs were a “leak,” there’s a chance that whoever has been working on them clearly doesn’t know much about the Colorado Avalanche. So, let’s just tone down the conspiracy theory talk.
