The Colorado Avalanche hold every advantage vs the Flyers, but have to stay out of their own heads.

The Colorado Avalanche are in Philadelphia for Monday’s game against the Flyers. While the Avs are coming off of a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia recently earned its first win of the 2026-27 season.

Perhaps the biggest advantage the Avalanche hold in this matchup is the goals per game. Colorado is averaging 4.50 goals per game while the Flyers’ number is measly 1.40.

That alone is a good indicator of how this game is likely to go. But, we all know that any team can win any game. It is just a matter of them stepping up more than their opponent.

Colorado has just 23 goals against this season, while Philadelphia has 33 goals against them. It should be Mackenzie Blackwood vs Joseph Woll in net for each team.

Blackwood has won his last two games, and has save percentages of .938 and .923 in those matchups. Colorado has made it clear that they are going with him as their starter for the season, with Scott Wedgewood getting some games here and there, including Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils. Blackwood has redeemed himself quite nicely after starting last season on injured reserve. It appears he has gained Colorado’s trust.

In Woll’s first two starts of the season, he helped the Flyers gain a point in each by holding his opponent to go to overtime. Though they those games, it’s a good thing for that team that he was able to hold his own.

The Avalanche have the bigger firepower over the Flyers, too. Artturi Lehkonen and Nathan MacKinnon each have six goals, which is good for first on the team. In comparison, Matvei Michkov leads the Flyers with four goals. No other Philadelphia player has more than two.

As Broadstreet Buzz acknowledged Sunday, Trevor Zegras is in a slump that is drastically hurting the Flyers. As long as he continues that into Monday night’s game, the Avalanche should continue to have the better chance of coming out on top.

In regards to the power play, the Avalanche lead in this category, too. They rank 13th in the league in power play percentage of 20.7%, while the Flyers are 30th at 10.3%. The big question for Colorado is whether or not they can continue to build on a power play that has struggled going back to last season.

Our own Aaron Poorman discussed the power play unit in an article earlier today.

Lastly, the Avalanche need to make sure they don’t make their lives difficult. I’m referring to, of course, the team’s defensive awareness—or lack thereof. They have turned the puck over a lot in their own zone this season, which is one of their biggest flaws so far. If they can keep control of the puck and not give up odd-man rushes, the Avalanche should be alright in this game.

We have seen some crazy things in the NHL over time, and the Avalanche will do their best to make sure the next crazy thing isn’t them losing to the NHL team with just a single win.
