Avalanche fans should be relieved that RFA list is very short

The Colorado Avalanche don’t have a ton to worry about regarding their next crop of restricted free agents.

Offer sheets have been a hot topic as of late due to the one tacked on Leo Carlsson by the Philadelphia Flyers. The Ducks matched the number, and he’ll remain in Anaheim. The topic has fans wondering who on their team could be slapped with an offer sheet, including Colorado Avalanche players.

The list for the Avalanche is pretty short. There are currently no candidates for the upcoming offseason. In 2028-29, two players are scheduled to hit free agency as restricted free agents.

Those players are newly acquired forwards Fyodor Svechkov and Zachary L’Heureux, who are both under contract for the next two seasons.

Both players are going into depth roles for the Avalanche as the team is top-heavy. Currently, L’Heureux is listed as the team’s fourth-line left wing and Svechkov is listed as the fourth-line center.

To receive compensation for a restricted free agent’s departure this offseason, the player would need to sign a contract with an AAV of $1,540,741 or more. Here is a full chart breakdown of the numbers.

Future numbers will be available at another time, in that respective year’s offseason. However, we can still talk about it.

RFA statuses will be up to the players

We aren’t talking about record-setting numbers for the Avalanche’s small group. L’Heureux and Svechkov aren’t putting up 30 goals each. Heck, they might not even reach 15.

That’s okay. Even though we would absolutely welcome draft pick compensation, the players on the team working out at the time is more important.

Svechkov’s current AAV is $1.25 million, and L’Heureux’s is $875k, which is barely over the league minimum. It would take monster seasons for either player to reach an offer sheet worthy season. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but the chances are pretty slim.

Svechkov has 12 goals and 22 assists in 122 career NHL games. L’Heureux has nine goals and 11 assists in 87 games.

Thankfully, the Avalanche don’t have to worry about restricted free agents potentially leaving for a number of years. They did, however, have one this offseason in Jack Drury. Colorado ended up trading him to the Nashville Predators, who then signed him to an extension for five years at $4.5 million annually. And with that, it was an easy decision for the Avs to move on.
