We finally have some news on the injury status to Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar.
Appearing on Altitude 92.5 Wednesday morning, head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that Makar will miss some time. Makar was banged up during the blowout win against the Calgary Flames. There have been multiple videos surfacing on the speculated hit(s) that could have resulted in the injury, and it is suspected that the injury is to Makar’s shoulder.
The good news is that it does not appear to be too serious. Something like a dislocated, broken or separated shoulder would have been a major concern. A break would have put Makar out until next season. Surgery would have been bad, too.
Shoulder injuries could take a while to heal, but while the Avalanche are looking to catch on to the top seed in the Western Conference, the best thing at this time would be to sit Makar
The Avalanche are all too familiar to having players miss a significant amount of time. Last season, the team had more call-ups from the AHL than any other team in the league.
The injury to Makar is a tremendous example of why teams need depth. Colorado’s roster is filled with depth, so although we never want to see Makar go down, the team has put themselves in a great position late in the season so that they can afford star players to miss time, sit out, or have their minutes reduced.
While they are not locked into the top seed in the Western Conference right now, they have proven to be extremely reliable to Avalanche fans as of late, especially with the resurgence of their power play.6 Hopefully the player who fills in for Makar both on defense and the power play will be able to contribute a great deal late in the season while Makar is out.
