Going into Tuesday night's Frozen Frenzy tilt against the New Jersey Devils, the Colorado Avalanche needed a reset after losing four straight. The team came away with a dominant, hard fought 8-4 win. The power play got back on track, going 4 for 6 and the penalty kill was perfect. The Avalanche had excellent nights out of everyone on the roster and it can be shown with a number of firsts for some Avalanche players.
Victor Olofsson's first hat trick and more
Perhaps the biggest accomplishment is Victor Olofsson's first NHL hat trick. The man they call "Goalofsson" had an excellent performance, with two assists to go along with his hat trick. That is his first 5-point game in the NHL as well. Olofsson has been a high- volume shooter so far this season with 33 shots on goal and 58 shot attempts. He ranks just outside of the top-25 in shots on goal and ninth in shot attempts. He was due for at least a goal and he cashed in on Tuesday night. The coaching staff has given him time with the first power play unit, and it paid off against New Jersey.
Olofsson's first goal came in the opening minutes of the second period and put the Avalanche up 3-0. He then notched his assists on both of Nathan MacKinnon's power play goals. The third period belonged to Goalofsson. He started things off by notching his first power play goal of the season to snag his second goal. And then to cap his stellar night, he wristed another past Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom.

Zakhar Bardakov nets his first NHL goal
Early in the first period, with the Avs up 1-0, Zakhar Bardakov scored his first goal in the NHL with an absolutely beautiful bar-down wrist shot, beating Markstrom just over his shoulder. Complete with a huge celly by jumping into the glass and the ritual bottle showers as he skated by the Avs bench. The goal came on two excellent passes from Gavin Brindley and Parker Kelly. Kelly's turnaround pass at the blue line sprung Bardakov in on a breakaway to put him in prime position for a pure snipe.

Gavin Brindley and Jack Ahcan both get their first NHL assist
Gavin Brindley's first NHL assist came on the Bardakov goal, but it was the effort he made that really stood out. Brindley grabbed the puck from out in front of goaltender Scott Wedgewood and skated it to the blue line. There, he took a big hit but managed to push the puck forward to Kelly, who quickly turned it around to Bardkov, streaking into the zone. Brindley has continually made smart decisions with and without the puck to put himself and his team in the right position to make plays.
Jack Ahcan's first assist came on the first Olofsson goal that opened the scoring in the second period. After the Devils carried the puck into the offensive zone, the Avs quickly smothered them at the boards and Ahcan was in the right spot at the right time to be able to pick up the puck and skate out of the zone. Olofsson was streaking through the neutral zone just ahead of the defense and Ahcan feathered a nice pass to him for a wide open shot. Much like Brindley, Ahcan has made solid, smart plays time and time again.
This team has a young crop of budding talent in Brindley and Ahcan, as well as Daniil Gushchin and the recently-signed Tristan Nielsen, both of whom have impressed in the AHL with seven points each. Olofsson was a depth signing for the Avalanche, designed to boost their middle-six scoring, and he made that $1.5 million contract look like it's going to work out with his incredible showing against New Jersey. This is the kind of depth scoring this team has been looking for the past few seasons.
