The new salary cap has this offseason looking like a busy and interesting one for the entire NHL. The Colorado Avalanche have very little cap space and still have multiple roster spots to fill, especially on defense. The Avalanche are going to have to move some salary out, either to trade for cheaper pieces, or create space to sign cheaper UFAs. With the draft right around the corner and free agency soon after, things are already starting to pickup around the league.
A number of Avalanche players have been through the rumor mill this offseason. Ross Colton, Miles Wood, and Josh Manson seem like the players most likely to move. After that, I can see Charlie Coyle or Sam Girard being tradeable, though I don't think trading Sammy G now is the right move; he holds more value at the deadline this year or next. But one big name has been coming up again and again: Martin Necas.
The rumors are that Necas hasn't been quite satisfied with his time in Denver. He's only been here half a season, so maybe he's willing to stick it out. The problem here is that the Avalanche cannot let him walk in free agency, and were banking on the idea that Necas would re-sign. Now that it's possible he won't, the Avalanche are exploring trade opportunities. Let's look at some trades that I would make that not only free up some cap space, but adequately replace Necas. I'm not quite sure how draft picks are valued so I haven't listed any, but I'm sure picks will be involved.
