The Colorado Avalanche are well into their second month of the hockey hiatus as the NHL has put the whole season on pause indefinitely.

We’ve been without Colorado Avalanche hockey now for 41 days, and I think I speak for everyone when I say it’s too long.

We don’t know when the NHL is going to resume its play. We don’t know if we’re going to finish out this season or just wait and start the next. Regardless, it’s highly unlikely there will be any fans in the seats when hockey resumes.

More from Mile High Sticking

It’s so hard to be on the hockey hiatus because it’s not the offseason. This isn’t August when there’s literally no hockey thing happening. We didn’t get closure on the season.

I’m feeling melancholy, obviously. At the end of this, in the comments, please share what you miss most about Colorado Avalanche hockey, or even just hockey in general. Here are the 10 (of hundreds) of things I miss about the Avs.

1. I miss getting together with my friends to watch the game

I have some great friends that I meet at games or with whom I go to bars to watch. I got to see most of them during the Stadium Series weekend, and we had so much fun. We talk everything about the game and the team and the players. We get that sense of camaraderie in rooting for the same team at the same time.

2. I miss jumping up and screaming when they score

I watch a lot of the games at home, too. And every time the Colorado Avalanche score, I jump up from my seat and scream. I’m pretty sure my neighbors don’t miss that about the season, but this is a sports-loving town. I’ve been watching some of the Stanley Cup games from 2001 on YouTube, and I scream at the TV for those games, too.

3. I miss the sound of the goal horn and yelling “Hey, hey, hey!”

I miss our old obnoxious goal horn which was an actual avalanche siren:

Blaaaat! Blaaaat! I love it because it’s such an ugly sound!

But I really miss our current goal horn, too.

I legit got chills listening to that.

After jumping up and screaming, we yell “hey, hey, hey” with the Avs Ice Patrol and then obnoxiously scream, “Woo-woo!” Opponent fans hate it, and I love that.

4. I miss watching Nathan MacKinnon skate

Everyone knows

Nathan MacKinnon

is an elite skater, one of the fastest in the NHL. He turns on the jets, and opponent defensemen just back up. And then he stops on a dime and just has his way with the game of hockey.

Yeah, his shot isn’t half bad either.

5. I miss the arguments about Cale Makar vs Quinn Hughes

Remember when the worst thing we had to argue about was who was the Calder Trophy favorite, Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes? All you had to do was mention one, and fans from the other team would jump in about their player. And then you’d get random teams agitating for their rookies… Those were such innocent times.

6. I miss the Z Smash

Nikita Zadorov is a menace, especially to his own teammates. However, one of his best tools is his gigantic check. Man, he’d send opponents into next week. He also sent Brendan Lemieux into his own captain, causing Gabriel Landeskog to lose his tooth.

7. I miss all my favorites

I love all the Colorado Avalanche players. You wear the Avs logo, you’re my guy. But we all know I have my favorites, the guys I accidentally write about again and again. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s Erik Johnson and Tyson Jost. (I don’t miss arguing about Jost, though.)

8. I miss the pre-game and post-game pressers

Hockey players don’t say much. But sometimes, you can get something out of them. And if you can’t, the Avs social will make some fun little video with them hamming it up. What I wouldn’t give to hear a Colorado Avalanche player say something about getting pucks in deep right about now.

9. I miss watching the standings with an eagle eye

The Colorado Avalanche have 92 points, just two behind the St. Louis Blues with a game in hand. I’ve been saying that last part for months. But I want to go back to watching to see if the Avs are finally going to be able to overtake the Blues and maintain the top of the Western Conference.

10. I miss writing about them and not having to talk about a pandemic

I want to write about scores and plays and highlights and even lowlights. Writing about the Avalanche is so much fun during the season. It’s a lot of fun in the offseason, too, because you can do focus and optioning and personal interest stories without missing out on the action. Writing now… it’s just weird.

I’m not going to focus on that. I miss the Colorado Avalanche. As I’ve stated before, I’d like to see them play out the rest of the season and the playoffs even if it’s in empty buildings. The team deserves their shot.

Ok, Avs fans. It’s your turn. Please share below what you miss most about Avalanche hockey.
