Three Colorado Avalanche players took part in a cake decorating contest, to the entertainment of fans at home.
The Colorado Avalanche always provide fun entertainment for fans with their annual Keybank Challenges. Whether it’s answering trivia questions about Sweden, or answering questions about each other, the challenges always generate a lot of amusing content and this year’s was no different.
At a time when there’s no new hockey to be watched, and most people isolating at home, some light entertainment was sorely needed and Avalanche Icing did not disappoint. In a series of videos Ryan Graves, J.T. Compher and Matt Calvert took part in two cake decorating challenges. Only one would be crowned victor, though, and win the coveted prize of a signed photograph of Altitude TV anchor Kyle Keefe.
For those who haven’t watched the videos yet, or who want to watch them again, I’ll share them here and talk about some of the highlights of each round.
What was particularly fun about this one was Ryan Graves stealing Matt Calvert’s cakes and hiding them before things have even started. Graves is definitely showing off his more devious side in these challenges. After successfully convincing everyone that he knew teammate Mark Barberio better than roommates J.T. Compher and Alexander Kerfoot knew each other last year, he’s being more bold with his attempts to win this year. Don’t let his innocent face fool you.
Matt Calvert also got payback for the cake theft, but against the wrong person, when he shoved one of J.T’s own cupcakes in his face.
The obvious highlight here is Matt Calvert’s presentation of his cupcakes. It was so well thought out and detailed that when he was done I actually applauded.
Ryan Graves learned the valuable lesson that cheaters never prosper and he found himself eliminated at the end of the first round.
In a shocking plot twist Matt Calvert drew Ryan Graves for the player he had to capture in cake form. Ryan Graves who was now on the panel of judges after his elimination at the end of the first round. We may never know if it was because Graves felt bad for hiding Calvert’s cakes, or if he just wanted to make sure he looked good on a cake, but helping Calvert when he ran out of black frosting was a nice touch.
J.T’s explanation for his Burakovsky cake is definitely going to be an interesting one.
Compher did say his explanation would make or break his cake and it definitely made it. When Andre Burakovsky first joined the team I wrote about some of the things he got up to while still playing for the Washington Capitals, which included going out in a blizzard without a hat or gloves and getting into a stranger’s car by mistake. Definitely worthy of the cake that was made in his honour.
But, of course, the deciding vote came down to Ryan Graves and to the surprise of no one he chose the cake that had his face on it.
So, with Matt Calvert the winner and proud owner of a signed Kyle Keefe photo, that concluded this year’s Keybank Challenge. Definitely some much needed levity.
