The Colorado Avalanche are hosting the New Jersey Devils on St. Patrick’s Day. Here are some Irish blessings for the game.
The Colorado Avalanche are hosting the New Jersey Devils in the final game of a four-game homestand the Avs needed to dominate. So far, they’re 1-2. The Devils have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
In other words, New Jersey is already playing meaningless hockey, and Colorado is fixing to. But I don’t want to focus on the negative, so let’s quickly get through some keys to the game:
- Colorado needs to play a full 60.
- The starting goalie needs to bail the team out sometimes.
- The team needs to trust the system.
- The systems aren’t working, and at least some of the coaching staff should be moving on, but we’re not focusing on that.
- The best players need to dominate.
- Don’t take stupid penalties.
- Score on the power play.
Ok, with that out of the way, let’s look at the particulars of the game.
How to Enjoy the Game
Game time: Mar 17, 1:00 pm MT

So, as you may have noticed, today is St. Patrick’s Day. In honor of that holiday, let’s have a little fun with Irish blessings geared towards the Avs playing today.
Let’s start with some light-hearted ones.
"“May the grass grow long on the road to hell for want of use.”"
For the Avs: “May the ice stay smooth in front of your goal for want of use.”
"“May your troubles be as few and as far apart as my Grandmothers teeth."
For the Avs: “May Devils’ goals be as few and as far apart as EJ’s teeth.”
"“Bless your little Irish heart and every other Irish part.”"
For the Avs: Bless your little burgundy heart and curse every Devils part.
"“As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way.”"
For the Avs: “As you navigate NHL officiating, may offsides and goalie interference never go the wrong way.”
Ok, let’s look a some of the more traditional Irish blessings.
"“May you always have…Walls for the windsA roof for the rainTea beside the fireLaughter to cheer youThose you love near youAnd all your heart might desire.”"
For the Avs:
“Tonight may you have…
A wall for a goalie
More Avs fans than Jersey trolls
Roach to call many Avs goals
Avs cheers to inspire you
Avalanche fans near you
And all our dreams may inspire.”
Another one:
"“May the luck of the IrishLead to happiest heightsAnd the highway you travelBe lined with green lights. These things, I warmly wish for you:Someone to love,Some work to do,A bit of o’ sun,A bit o’ cheer,And a guardian angel always near. Here’s health and prosperity,To you and all your posterity,And them that doesn’t drink with sincerity,That they be damned for all eternity.”"
For the Avs:
“May the altitude of Colorado
Lead to lack of oxygen
As the sea level Devils
Line the Denver arena
These things I warmly wish for you:
Goals to celebrate,
A bit of o’power play
A bit o’home ice
And a blind referee always near.
Here’s defense and checking
To you and all your beckoning
And them that doesn’t ‘lanche-ing
Be damned for all, uh, eternity.”
Ok, this is getting a little difficult. So as the final Irish blessing for tonight’s game and the rest of the Colorado Avalanche season, here’s one of the most traditional of Irish blessings:
"“May your days be many and your troubles be few, May all God’s blessings descend upon you, May peace be within you, May your heart be strong, May you find what you’re seeking wherever you roam.”"
For the Avs:
“May your goals be many and your penalties few. May all the standings’ blessings descend upon you. May consistency be within you. May your passing be strong, and may you find good goal tending wherever Devils may roam.”
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Avs Nation. Let’s continue to appreciate the few Colorado Avalanche games we have left.
