The Colorado Avalanche’s former ECHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, won the Kelly Cup twice in a row. I was lucky enough to attend one of their overtime games.

As you know, the Colorado Avalanche ECHL affiliate has been the Colorado Eagles, who are handily located in Loveland, Colorado. Well, this summer they became the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate.

If you have not been to a Colorado Eagles game, this coming season you need to add it to your list.

I have been to many Avalanche games and they are amazing. The fans are engaging, the in game entertainment is great, and the hockey is fun.

That said, there are traditions that Eagles fans do, and I hope they continue to do those when the Eagles move to the AHL. Some traditions simply shouldn’t go away — like Avs fans chanting “Red Wing suck” no matter who the opponent is.

I’m and EMT, so I sometimes get to work the ambulance at big events. I got to work the Colorado Eagles games on the ambulance a few times. I of course being a huge hockey fan was so excited to get some free hockey.

Well, one of the playoff games I got to attend as an EMT went into ovetime. To be honest, most of the other people in the area where we stand were excited to not lose. However, weirdly, they were not excited to be staying longer. Almost every fan stayed for all the overtime, though.

ECHL hockey is the same as the NHL in that you keep playing until a team emerges victorious. At the game I attended as an EMT, the first overtime was uneventful. The second overtime was not. With under ten minutes left in the game, the Colorado Eagles won the game!

Who scored the game winner you might ask? Matt Register. Killer bomb from the point hits the back of the net. I have never heard the Budweiser Events Center that loud. It may have partly been my screaming but I still think the fans were something else that night. Even the ones who were ambivalent about the extra hockey were psyched.

Fire told me after that I was like the girl from the water boy “That ain’t no  guess, That’s what its gonna be.”

What can I say, I know my hockey.

The Colorado Eagles have now won the Kelly Cup twice in a row. Naturally, now that they’ll be an AHL team, they can’t compete for that ECHL trophy any longer. However, as a Colorado Avalanche fan, I highly recommend attending an Eagles game once next season. They are fun and exciting.
